Raccoons, rodents, birds of prey, cats... the list goes on and on. In an effort to protect our investment in future omelets we posted a brave and courageous sentinel to guard the hen house.

Maka is our dog, a former street mutt from the Republic of Georgia. Despite her tough beginnings on the hard former-Soviet streets we entrusted her with guarding the hens.

We chose to ignore some of Maka’s previous transgressions, such as the time we caught her eating a dead chicken she found caught in a fence. And then there was the time she tried to run off with a neighbor’s rooster. And the time she tried to gorge herself on the remains of a chicken killed by a hawk. We ignored these prior crimes and chose to focus on how she once played nicely with a disabled chick as a puppy.

Life is full of second chances. Maka got a second chance. And then she betrayed us.

It seems you can take the dog out of the street, but you can’t take the street out of the dog. Turn your back for a second and Maka is digging her way under the coop.

This is why it’s also important to secure your coop with sturdy wire mesh. It keeps out rats and raccoons, as well as worthless guard dogs.
